Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Purpose

Improper convertible top operation on some early production models may be caused by the elastic strap between bows # 2 and # 3. This strap can cause the flipper arms on each side to be damaged during convertible top operation. If a flipper arm is bent, the control link assembly must be replaced.

A new design elastic strap is available to eliminate the problem. The new strap has a black plastic retainer at each end.

There are three possible types of elastic strap installed on affected vehicles, two of which may cause improper top operation:

^ Original factory-design, which is an elastic strap sewn into the stay pad (wide nylon webbing) between bows # 2 and # 3. Remove the original strap, then install the new elastic strap.

^ A modification was made on some of the affected vehicles by removing the rear of the strap from the stay pad and mounting it to the # 3 bow with a metal plate and two screws. Remove and discard the strap, plate and screws, and install the new elastic strap.

^ The new-design strap with a retainer at each end. This strap does not require replacement.
