Recall - Engine Control Harness Routing: Overview

No: SR-02-001

DATE: May, 2002

MODEL: See below

SUBJECT:
ENGINE CONTROL HARNESS ROUTING - SAFETY RECALL CAMPAIGN

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America, Inc. is voluntarily recalling certain 2002 Diamante vehicles because the engine control harness may have been incorrectly routed, resulting in insufficient clearance between the harness and the exhaust manifold heat shield. If the harness contacts the heat shield when it is hot, the harness insulation will melt, possibly grounding the crank angle sensor wiring and causing the engine to run erratically or stop suddenly.

This recall procedure includes:
^ Inspect the engine control harness for damage. Repair as necessary.

^ Inspect the clearance between the engine control harness and the exhaust manifold heat shield. If the clearance is less than 15 mm (0.58 inch), use a tie wrap ("zip tie") to secure the harness away from the exhaust manifold heat shield.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
2002 Diamante models produced between 8/24/01 and 11/26/01

IMPORTANT
Affected inventory vehicles must be inspected/repaired before the vehicle is sold. Dealers must check their inventory vehicles' VINs on the Warranty Super Screen to verify whether the vehicle is an affected VIN for this recall campaign.

CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION

A letter will be sent to all owners of affected vehicles, telling them to bring their vehicle to their Mitsubishi Motors dealer to have the engine control harness inspected. A copy of the customer notification letter is shown in this bulletin.

REQUIRED OPERATIONS

Before starting this campaign procedure, CHECK ON THE WARRANTY SUPERSCREEN to verify that the vehicle is an affected VIN for this campaign and that this campaign procedure has not already been completed.

1. Inspect the engine control harness for damage. Repair as necessary.

2. Inspect the clearance between the engine control harness and the exhaust manifold heat shield. Clearance between the harness and the heat shield must be at least 15 mm (0.58 inch).

a. If the clearance is less than 15 mm (0.58 inch) install a high temperature nylon tie wrap ("zip tie") to secure the engine control harness to the main harness, away from the exhaust manifold heat shield.
