1996 QUEST REAR HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR REPLACEMENT

APPLIED VEHICLE(S):
1996 Quest (V40)

APPLIED DATE(S):
Vehicles built before April 25, 1996

SERVICE INFORMATION

The rear heated oxygen sensor harness design for a 1996 Quest was changed in production on April 25, 1996. The sensor harness has been lengthened to move the electrical connector inside the vehicle. The sensor part number did not change to distinguish the new style (long harness) from the old style (short harness).

When replacing the rear heated oxygen sensor on a 1996 Quest built before April 25, 1996 the replacement sensor may look different from the part currently installed (i.e. a longer harness and a large grommet attached). Use the following procedure to install the long-harness type sensor.

IMPORTANT:
Always use the long-harness type rear heated oxygen sensor when replacing the sensor to repair a P0136 or P0141 diagnostic trouble code.

You can still use Quest rear heated oxygen sensors equipped with the short harness from existing dealer inventory on vehicles built prior to April 25, 1996 for DTCs other than P0136 or P0141. The short-harness type sensors should not be used on vehicles originally equipped with the long harness type sensor built after April 25, 1996.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Figure 1:

1. Remove the old sensor from the vehicle (see Figure 1).

CAUTION:
Be careful not to damage any wires when removing the grommet.

2. Cut, remove and discard the grommet from the floor panel where the wiring harness enters the passenger compartment.

3. Install the new sensor in the exhaust. Connect the sensor to the vehicle wire harness connector.

4. Push the vehicle harness and oxygen sensor wires up through the floor panel hole. Neatly tuck the wires in place under the carpet in the passenger compartment.

5. Insert the new grommet (attached to the new sensor harness) into the floor panel hole. Make sure it is fully seated for a water tight seal.
