Service Procedure
CHECK THE IGNITION TIMING AND THE BASE IDLE SPEED USING THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE:1. Start engine and warm it up until engine coolant temperature indicator points to the middle of gauge. Ensure engine speed remains below 1,000 rpm.
2. Open hood and run engine at about 2,000 rpm for approximately 2 minutes under no-load. Rev engine 2 or 3 times under no-load, then run engine at idle speed for 1 minute.
Figure 1:
3. Turn off engine and disconnect throttle position sensor harness connector (see Figure 1). Re-start engine and rev engine (2,000 - 3,000 rpm) 2 or 3 times under no-load, then run engine at idle speed.
Figure 2:
4. Check ignition timing with a timing light (see Figure 2). (specification is 15° +/- 2° BTDC in "N" position)
a. If ignition timing is correct, proceed to step 5.
b. If necessary, adjust ignition timing to the specified value by turning distributor after loosening bolts which secure distributor.
5. Rev the engine (2,000 - 3,000 rpm) 2 or 3 times under no-load, then run the engine at idle speed.
6. Check the base idle speed (specification is 700 +/- 50 rpm in "N" position).
a. If the base idle speed is correct, proceed to step 7.
Figure 3:
b. If necessary, turn the idle speed adjusting screw to adjust the base idle speed (see Figure 3).
7. Turn engine off and reconnect throttle position sensor harness connector.
8. Erase the DTC code using CONSULT.
9. Start engine and rev (2,000 - 3,000 rpm) 2 or 3 times under no-load, then run engine at idle speed.
INSTALLING THE COUNTERMEASURE ECM
If both the ignition timing and the base idle speed did not require adjustment, replace the ECM with the countermeasure ECM.
NOTE:
Another factor which may affect a vehicle's starting performance is the viscosity of the oil that is used. An API SG or SH quality, 5W-30 is the preferred engine oil for most Nissan models. Particularly in colder weather, oil that is rated 5W-30 will make it easier to start an engine as well as maintain a stable idle during warm-up because it will not thicken as much as a 10W-30 rated oil will.
