Compressor Clutch: Service and Repair

1. Using suitable clutch spanner wrench, hold clutch hub and remove bolt retaining clutch hub to crankshaft, Fig. 2.
2. Using clutch removing bolt, remove clutch assembly from crankshaft. Be careful not to damage key on compressor crankshaft.
3. Remove four coil mounting screws and remove coil.
4. Remove two bearing retaining snap rings located inside of clutch wheel.
5. Using clutch wheel remover, KV99100700, or equivalent, and conventional puller, remove pulley with bearings from clutch wheel.
6. Using bearing remover, ST33061000, or equivalent, press clutch wheel bearings out from clutch wheel.
7. Check friction surface of clutch for damage and, if necessary, replace clutch wheel and pulley as a set.
8. Check that clearance between clutch wheel and pulley is .016-.024 inch. If not, replace clutch wheel assembly.
9. Using suitable solvent, clean friction surfaces.
10. Check continuity of coil and, if there is no continuity, replace coil.
11. Using bearing installer, ST02371000, or equivalent, press bearings into pulley.
12. Install outer snap ring in groove of pulley.

13. Using installer, KV99100610, and stopper, ST33061000, or equivalents, press clutch wheel into pulley, Fig. 3.
14. Install inner snap ring in groove of clutch wheel.
15. Position coil on compressor housing, then install mounting screws and torque to 5.1 ft. lbs.
16. Install clutch assembly on crankshaft. Key should be set on crankshaft before installing clutch assembly.
17. Using suitable clutch spanner wrench to hold clutch hub, install clutch hub securing bolt and torque to 11 ft. lbs.
18. If clutch assembly was replaced, engage and disengage clutch approximately thirty times to break in new assembly.
