Compressor Replacement

Operate compressor for 10-15 minutes, if possible, with engine at idle speed, A/C control set for maximum cooling, blower on high speed, and windows open, in order to return refrigerant oil to compressor. When installing new compressor, drain all oil from new and old compressors and add same amount of oil to new compressor as was removed from old compressor.

1. Disconnect battery ground cable and discharge A/C system.
2. Remove bolts securing windshield washer tank, and lay tank and bracket aside.
3. Disconnect speedometer cable at union, and disconnect wiring harness connector to compressor.
4. Loosen A/C idler pulley and remove compressor drive belt.
5. Remove compressor upper mounting bolts.
6. Support compressor, remove lower mounting bolts, then rotate compressor to gain access to refrigerant lines.
7. Remove bolts securing refrigerant lines to compressor, disconnect lines, then plug lines and open fittings.
8. Remove compressor with clutch facing up.
9. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Drain refrigerant oil from old and new compressors and add same amount of new refrigerant oil to system as was drained from old compressor.
b. Torque refrigerant line bolts to 10-13 ft.lbs. and provide clearance of at least .39 in. between refrigerant lines at compressor.
c. Rotate compressor shaft several revolutions by hand before installing drive belt.
d. Evacuate and recharge system, then check for leaks.
