1983-1984 PULSAR NX SECONDARY HOOD LATCH ASSEMBLY RECALL OWNER'S NOTIFICATION LETTER
Dear Nissan Owner:
This notice is sent you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety may exist in some 1983-1984 Nissan Pulsar NX model vehicles. Recently we have received information concerning damage to the secondary hood latch mechanism of Pulsar NX models due to misuse and excessive force being applied to the hood latch release lever contrary to the instructions contained in the owner's manual. Improper operation of this hood latch release mechanism can cause the secondary latch feature to become inoperative. If this were to occur and you were to drive with the hood not fully closed, or open the primary hood latch while driving, the hood could open fully, possibly resulting in an accident.
All authorized Nissan/Datsun dealers have service instructions and repair parts. Please make an appointment with your dealer to have your Pulsar NX corrected. The correction will be to replace the hood latch assembly with an improved one which will reduce the likelihood of abuse or improper operation. This service will take about thirty minutes to perform. Until the latch can be replaced, make sure you have properly engaged the primary latch when closing the hood. While firmly pressing the hood closed, listen for a clicking noise which will confirm the proper engagement of the primary latch. In addition, please review pages 14-1 and 14-2 of your owner's manual so that you will understand the proper way to release the secondary hood latch when it is necessary to open the hood for service.
Please bring this notice with you when you keep your service appointment, for it contains pre-printed claim information designed to satisfy record-keeping requirements specified by the Federal Government. If the dealer fails, or is unable to make the necessary repairs free of charge, you should inform the Consumer Relations Office at the appropriate Regional Office listed in the Warranty Information Booklet, or you may contact the National Consumer Relations Office, Nissan Motor Corporation in U.S.A. at P.O. Box 191, Gardena, California 90247.
If the vehicle is still not repaired free of charge within a reasonable time, you may also contact the Administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 400 Seventh Street, S.W., Washington, D.C. 20590; or you may call the toll free Auto Safety Hotline at (800) 424-9393 (Washington, D.C. area residents may call 426-0123).
We urge you to respond to this notice and regret any inconvenience it may cause you.
