Automatic Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair

The engine and transaxle must be removed as an assembly on these models.
1. Release fuel system pressure as follows:
a. Start engine, then disconnect fuel pump electrical connector, located under luggage floor mat.
b. After engine stalls, crank engine two or three times.
c. Turn ignition switch off, then reconnect fuel pump electrical connector.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
3. Disconnect or remove all hoses, linkages, electrical connectors and accessories necessary for engine removal.
4. Attach suitable lifting equipment to engine.
5. Remove engine mounting bolts.
6. Carefully lift engine and transaxle assembly from vehicle, then separate transaxle from engine.
7. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Check drive plate run out by turning crankshaft one full turn with dial indicator probe resting against plate. Runout should not exceed .020 inch.

b. When connecting torque converter to transaxle, measure distance ``A,'' Fig. 6, to ensure correct assembly. Distance ``A'' should be .689-.787 inch on 1985-86 models and at least .709 inch on 1987-88 models.
c. Apply suitable sealant to torque converter attaching bolts, then align marks on torque converter and drive plate and bolt converter to the plate.
d. After installing converter, rotate crankshaft several times and ensure transaxle rotates freely without binding.
