MANUAL TRANSMISSION ADAPTER PLATE DISASSEMBLY PROCEDURE
APPLIED MODELS: 1984-1987 300ZX, 1986.5-1987 200SX, 1986.5-1987 D21 Truck, 1987 Pathfinder with manual 5-Speed Transmission
SERVICE INFORMATION
To avoid breakage of the adapter plate while disassembling FS5W71C and FS5R30A manual 5-speed transmissions, the following precautions must be followed:
1. Use a large capacity hydraulic press, with 6" or more between bed rails.
2. Support the adapter plate on the press bed with steel bars, available from your local metal supplier. (We recommend cold rolled steel bars of 1" thick by 4" - 5" wide by 11" - 12" long.)
3. Do not attempt to press gears off of main shaft or countershaft while pressing either shaft out of the adapter plate.
FS5W71C:
FS5R30A:
CAUTION: It is extremely important to pull all gears, bearings and hubs off with pullers, as shown in the service manual, before the shafts are pressed out of the adapter plate. If not, the adapter plate may be broken during the press operation.
4. Once the transmission adapter plate and shafts are prepared by removing gears, bearings, etc., and it is well supported in the press, use the hydraulic ram of the press to push alternately, about 1/8" at a time, on the mainshaft, then the countershaft, and then the mainshaft, and so on until the shafts may be removed from the adapter plate.
