Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair
Fig. 1 Cylinder head bolt loosening sequence:
REMOVAL
1. On models equipped with CA18ET engine, remove air intake pipe.
2. On all models, remove timing belt as described under ``Timing Belt, Replace.''
3. Remove camshaft pulley.
4. Remove cylinder head and manifolds as an assembly. Loosen cylinder head attaching bolts in several steps in sequence, Fig. 1.

INSTALLATION
Using Torque Wrench Only
1. Position No. 1 cylinder at TDC of compression stroke by setting crankshaft key at 11 o'clock position and camshaft knock pin at 12 o'clock position.
2. Install cylinder head with new gasket. Torque bolts in sequence, Fig. 8, to 22 ft. lbs. Retorque all bolts in sequence to 58 ft. lbs., then loosen all bolts completely. Again, torque bolts to 22 ft. lbs. and finally to 54-61 ft. lbs. in sequence.
3. Install camshaft pulley, then the timing belt and air intake pipe, if equipped.
Using Torque Wrench And Angle Wrench
1. Position No. 1 cylinder at TDC of compression stroke by setting crankshaft key at 11 o'clock position and camshaft knock pin at 12 o'clock position.
2. Install cylinder head with new gasket. Torque bolts in sequence, Fig. 8, to 22 ft. lbs. Retorque all bolts in sequence to 58 ft. lbs., then loosen all bolts completely. Again, torque bolts to 22 ft. lbs. and finally to 90° to 95° clockwise, in sequence.
3. Install camshaft pulley, then the timing belt and air intake pipe, if equipped.
