Engine Disassembly
Fig. 5 Engine outer components. 1987-88:
1. Remove external components from engine, Fig. 5, then mount engine on suitable workstand.
2. Remove timing belt as described under ``Timing Belt, Replace.''
3. Drain coolant and engine oil.
4. Remove water pump as described under ``Water Pump, Replace.''
5. Remove oil pan and strainer as described under ``Oil Pan, Replace.''
6. Remove cylinder head as described under ``Cylinder Head, Replace.''
7. Remove pistons.

8. Remove bearing caps and crankshaft, loosening main bearing cap bolts in sequence, Fig. 4.
PISTON & ROD DISASSEMBLY
1. Remove piston rings with a ring remover.
2. Press out piston pin. Keep disassembled parts in order.
CYLINDER HEAD DISASSEMBLY
1. Remove rocker shaft with rocker arms, loosening bolts in two or three stages. Keep rocker shaft components in correct order.
2. Remove camshaft from front side.
3. Using suitable tool, remove valve component parts.
