POWER STEERING GEAR LEAKAGE AT HOSE CLAMPS
APPLIED MODELS: 1985-1987 Maxima, 1987 Stanza, 1987 Sentra & 1987 Pulsar NX
SERVICE INFORMATION
Some of the Applied Models may exhibit power steering fluid on the outside of the steering gear boots. Before removing and rebuilding the steering gear, check the tightness of the hose clamps on the fluid return line between the pinion housing and the fluid reservoir. If these clamps are loose, fluid can drip onto the boots and give the appearance of a leak from inside the boots. Check the clamps at the locations shown below.
Power Steering Gear Assembly:
Maxima & Stanza Steering Gear
There may be three clamps on the rubber hose over the passenger side boot. The center clamp is there to secure a noise-reducing orifice at the middle of the hose. Do not overtighten this clamp.

SERVICE PROCEDURE - ALL MODELS
Use the following procedure to determine whether fluid on the outside of the boot comes from an internal or external leak:
1. Remove the boot clamp and pull the boot away from the steering gear.
2. If the inside of the boot is dry or has only traces of grease, the leak is external. Check for loose hose clamps as shown in the illustrations. Tighten any loose hose clamp(s), install a new boot clamp and fill the system with new fluid.
3. If the inside of the boot is coated with power steering fluid, the leak is internal and the steering gear must be removed for further inspection.
