Differential Side Bearing Preload Adjustment
If transmission case, bearing retainer, side bearing, differential case or converter housing is replaced, final drive should adjusted. Preload is adjusted by selecting shims of appropriate thickness.1. Remove left side bearing inner cone and shim(s) from bearing retainer.
2. Place Tool and the following parts in transmission case.
Gasket must be installed on transmission case.
3. Position four spacers so they are evenly spaced around transmission case and install converter housing. Then tighten bolts alternately to the specified torque.
With tightening Torque: 14 N.m (1.4 kg-m, 10 ft-lb)
4. Rotate final drive assembly a few times to ensure proper seating.
5. To find the correct shim size, use method (1) or (2) described below.
a. Using a feeler gauge, measure the widest gap around Tool for the proper shim size to be installed.
b. If shims are available, find the largest shim that can be placed into the gap at any point around Tool.
This will be the correct shim size to use.
6. When the proper size shim(s) has been determined, remove converter housing, final drive assembly, side bearing inner cone and Tools (J33200).
7. Install the proper size shim(s) and left side bearing inner cone into bearing retainer.
8. Proceed with final assembly.
9. Measure diff. side bearing preload with KV38105900.
Specified diff. side bearing preload: 5.9 - 7.4 N.m (60 - 75 kg-cm, 52 - 65 in-lb)
- Turn final drive assembly at least 10 times before measuring diff. side bearing preload.
- Changes in diff. side bearing preload per revolution should be within 1.0 N.m (10 kg-cm, 8.7 in-lb) without binding.
- If any abnormalities are noted above, or diff. side bearing preload is outside specified range, disassemble and reassemble again.
10. Disassemble transmission case and remove final drive assembly.
