MAXIMA COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR

HARNESS RE-ROUTING

SERVICE INFORMATION:

On some 1989 Maximas, the branch of the EFI harness which connects to the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor may be misrouted, and there is a possibility that the wires may become damaged at the connector. If the wires connected to the Coolant Temperature Sensor break, the engine may be difficult to start when cold. On California models, the "Check Engine" warning light may be activated. Therefore, this wire harness must be inspected, re-routed, and, if necessary, repaired.

SERVICE PROCEDURE:

Inspect the coolant temperature sensor sub-harness and connector where it enters the sensor. If the routing appears as that shown in Figures 1, 2 or 3, then the service procedure on the following pages must be employed. If the routing appears like that shown in Figure 4 (See page 2/3), no modification is required.
1. Disconnect the connector plug from the coolant temperature sensor.

2. Gently cut the black tape covering the tie wrap which secures the sensor sub-harness to the EFI main harness. Cut the tie wrap.

3. Re-route the sub-harness so that it is routed as shown in Figure 4.
SPECIAL NOTE: In addition to the correct routing for the sensor sub-harness, it is extremely important to establish a clearance of 22 mm between the EFI main harness and the end of the sensor connector. An example of improper clearance is shown in FIGURE 1. An example of proper clearance is shown in FIGURE 4. If it is necessary to move the EFI main harness to achieve the 22 mm clearance, use the procedure found on page 3/3:

FIGURE 5:

a. Remove clip securing EFI harness to the strut housing.
b. Pull EFI harness to straighten.
c. If necessary, reposition plastic EFI harness clip RECEPTOR (looks like a saddle holder with splines) as shown in Figure 5.
d. Install clip at the strut housing.
4. Re-secure the sensor sub-harness to the EFI main harness using a black tie wrap.

5. Plug the connector housing to the Engine Temperature Sensor.
