Engine Disassembly
PISTON, ROD & CRANKSHAFTFig. 25 Crankshaft Bearing Cap Bolt Removal Sequence:
1. Place engine on a suitable work stand, drain coolant and oil, remove timing chain, cylinder head and oil pan and pump.
2. Remove piston and take snap rings out, then heat piston and rod assemblies to 140-158°F and push out piston pin. If heat method is not used, piston pins may be pressed out with a suitable press at room temperature.
3. Measure crankshaft endplay using a dial indicator. Endplay should be .0024-.0071 inch.
4. Remove main bearing caps by loosening bolts in two or three steps, then remove crankshaft, Fig. 25.
CYLINDER HEAD
Fig. 26 Manifold Bolt Removal Sequence:
1. Remove manifolds from cylinder head. Loosen bolts according to sequence shown in Fig. 26.
2. Remove rocker shafts with rocker arms. Loosen bolts in two or three steps.
3. Measure camshaft endplay with a dial indicator. Endplay should be .0012-.0051 inch. Remove camshaft and valve components and oil seals.
