300ZX THEFT WARNING SYSTEM (TWS) WILL NOT ACTIVATE OR WORKS INTERMITTENTLY

APPLIED MODELS: 1990-93 300ZX (Z32)

SERVICE INFORMATION:

On some 300ZX vehicles, the TWS may not arm or, when armed, may go off intermittently. The nonfunction or intermittent malfunction of the TWS may be caused by disengagement of the security system's hood switch. Direct sunlight or engine heat could result in expansion of the hood, disengaging it from the switch.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

1. Confirm that the cause of the TWS nonfunction or intermittent malfunction, is the disengagement of the system's hood switch. (Figure 1)

a. Open the engine hood.

b. Manually depress the switch to establish continuity and confirm that the TWS will properly activate.

1. If the system properly activates, carefully adjust the bracket for the hood switch to optimize or increase contact with the hood.

2. If the system does not activate, refer to the "Theft Warning System Trouble Diagnoses" of the Electrical Section in the 300ZX (Z32) Service Manual.
