DIVERSITY ANTENNA CONNECTOR TAB


APPLIED MODELS: 1989-90 models equipped with the "Diversity" Antenna Switching System

SERVICE INFORMATION

During some overly vigorous glass cleaning operations, the L-shaped connector tabs may dislodge from the wire grid applied to the glass on certain 1989-90 models equipped with the "Diversity" Antenna Switching System. This bulletin shows how to re-mount these tabs using a special epoxy compound with electro-chemical properties.

REPAIR INFORMATION

1. Disconnect the wire cable from the dislodged antenna connector tab.
2. To prepare the connector tab for re-attachment, roughen the surface with a piece of # 150 grit sandpaper. Then, spray the tab with brake or electrical cleaner. Allow to air dry.
3. Carefully clean the wire grid on the glass using a quick spray application of brake or electrical cleaner. Allow to air dry.
4. Apply a thin coating of 3M "Scotch-Weld Brand Structural Adhesive 1751" 3M P/N 62-1751-0530-3 to both the antenna connector tab and the window grid wire.

NOTE: Follow the 3M (manufacturer of the epoxy) mixing instructions on the package. This product has special electro-chemical properties which, to our knowledge, at this time, are not available in a substitute epoxy manufactured elsewhere.

5. Carefully apply a strip of duct-type tape over the tab assembly to hold it in place while the epoxy cures (avoid covering other defroster or antenna grid lines as this may damage them upon removal of the tape).

NOTE: For a successful repair, it is absolutely essential to allow the newly-epoxied joint to set in a shaded, dry (preferably, inside your garage) area for a minimum of 4 hours before removing the tape and returning the car to the customer.
6. Remove the duct tape slowly to avoid jarring the joint.
7. Re-attach the electrical cable to the tab joint connector.
8. Inform the customer that he/she should not operate the rear defroster and, for the next 24 hours, should not clean or rub the repaired tab joint/glass area.
