MODIFICATION TO HATCH LATCH SWITCH

APPLIED MODELS: 1990 300ZX

SERVICE INFORMATION:

On some 1990 300ZX vehicles, the vehicle Security system (VSS) may display a false switch failure warning and/or the rear hatch area courtesy light may not illuminate. If those incidents are noticed, a likely cause is the warpage of a plastic insulator strip within the hatch latch switch assembly. This Technical Bulletin provides specific instructions to modify this switch.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

Removal of Hatch Latch Switch

1. Carefully lift up the inside rear weatherstrip (Figure 1).
2. Loosen the plastic "quick fasteners" and pull away rear wall finisher to gain access to latch switch assembly.

Figure 2:

3. Disconnect the clip which secures the actuator rod to the latch switch assembly (Figure 2).

Figure 3:

4. Remove 3 latch switch assembly screws.
5. Move the assembly slowly out to the right side (Figure 3).
CAUTION: Be careful not to damage the latch switch assembly. At this point, the opener cable and wire harness are still attached.

6. Carefully remove the opener cable and wire harness connector from the latch switch assembly.
NOTE: Straighten opener-cable immediately if it is bent when removing.

Figure 4:

MODIFICATION PROCEDURE OF HATCH LATCH ASSEMBLY

1. Place the latch assembly on a clean, hard surface.
2. Utilizing a sharp utility knife (an X-acto type, fitted with a new No. 1 blade, works well), trim the shaded area identified in the following illustration (Figure 4).

Figure 5:

3. Check for proper clearance (.5 - 1.0 mm) between opener lever and switch lever (Figure 5). The clearance adjustment can be achieved by carefully bending the opener lever in the directions shown by the large arrow.

INSTALLATION

1. Prior to locating hatch latch switch assembly on the rear wall of the body, re-attach opener-cable to the assembly (Figure 6).

Figure 7:

2. Temporarily secure (approximately: finger tight) the latch assembly with the 3 fastener screws.

a. Move latch switch assembly to the extreme bottom of its travel in the U-shaped cut-out on the body's rear wall (Figure 7).

Figure 8:

2 b. ADJUSTING HORIZONTAL DIMENSION (CENTERING) of LATCH ASSEMBLY. Slowly close the hatch so that the stricker engages - but, DOES NOT LOCK - the latch assembly. Performing this operation will center, laterally, the latch assembly within the body cut-out by shifting and settling the assembly against the striker (Figure 8).

Figure 9:

2 c. ADJUSTING VERTICAL DIMENSION (DEPTH) of LATCH ASSEMBLY: Move latch assembly upward, until dimension "A" = 2 mm (Figure 9).
3. Torque latch switch assembly mounting screws to 4.1 - 4.7 Ft./Lbs.(49 - 55 In./Lbs). NOTE: Do not over-tighten mounting screws.

4. Re-fit lock rod and wire harness connector.

5. Check that the hatch does not require excessive closing effort (it should require approximately 75 pounds of force to secure the hatch). Close all car doors and windows. Make sure that you close the hatch by pressing on the rear edge only. Pressing on the middle of the hatch may create a dent. If the latch requires too much effort to close, readjust the latch by raising the assembly in very small, 1 mm steps.

NOTE: The depth adjustment must be correct. Otherwise, the hatch will not open easily (too tight) or will cause a rattling noise (too loose).

6. Prior to re-attaching the rear wall finisher, perform the following FINAL CHECKS:

^ Make sure that the latch switch assembly can be easily opened by the hand release lever.
^ Make sure that the "courtesy" light turns on or off when the hatch is opened or closed.
^ Make sure that the latch assembly is opened by the key cylinder.
