NOTE: There are several products currently on the market that will produce a similar grainy surface texture, for example, 3M Rocker Schutz and PPG Roadguard.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
^ When using repair and refinishing materials, be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions correctly.
^ This bulletin deals with the method for repairing the bumper fascia damaged by scratches. For repair of damaged areas caused by other than scratches, refer to Technical Bulletin BF87-012 (TS87-063 ) "Polyurethane & Polypropylene Bumper Fascia Repair Instructions".
1. Clean repair area with soap and water. Remove grease and tar with solvent.
^ When degreasing grainy surface, use a nylon brush.
^ If part of bumper is warped or deformed, problem area should be repaired by heating with an infrared lamp or heat gun to a temperature of 60~C (140~F) to 80~C (176~F).
^ As necessary, cover with masking tape those portions not to be repaired.
2. Grind surface of repair with a 36 grit disc. Grind about 38.1 mm (1-1/2 in) around damage to obtain a taper for best adhesion.
3. Featheredge paint around repair with a 180 grit disc. Wipe with a clean, dry rag and blow off with compressed air.
4. Mix Flexible Parts Repair Material according to instructions and apply to repair with a squeegee, building it up higher than the undamaged area. Allow it to cure for 20 to 30 minutes at 16 to 26~C (60 to 80~F).
5. After curing, sand with 180 grit disc followed by 240 grit disc.
^ Be careful not to sand undamaged grainy pattern.
6. Fill sand scratches and pinholes with Flexible Parts Putty. Allow at least 15 minutes to dry then sand with a 320 grit disc. Then sand repair area and area around it with a 400 grit disc to provide good adhesion. Clean surface of repair with a dry rag and blow off with compressed air.
7. Apply diluted primer-surfacer to repair areas.
Allow primer-surfacer to dry. (Use a primer-surfacer suitable for Flexible Parts Putty.) For proper mixing ratios and drying time, obtain instructions from paint maker.
8. Sand primer-coated area and area around it with a 240 or 320 grit disc until surface is smooth.
9. Apply coats of non-diluted primer-surfacer to repair areas.
^ The required grainy pattern is achieved by reducing air pressure required to spray the primer-surfacer and by increasing paint discharge.
^ Slightly increase air pressure to a small grain size to eliminate noticeable graduation of repair area or to match the original coat as much as possible.
^ A test piece should be coated first to check that grain size is correct.
10. Allow coated areas to dry completely.
11. Apply top coats.
