HATCH LATCH ADJUSTMENT
APPLIED MODELS: 1990 300ZX(Z32) Turbo/Non-Turbo
SERVICE INFORMATION
On some 1990 300ZX vehicles, customers may experience the following:
Hatch rattle High closing effort Booming noise Hatch will not close
If one or more of these symptoms are reported, incorrect adjustment of the hatch latch may be the cause. This Technical Service Bulletin provides specific instructions for proper adjustment of the hatch latch asssembly.
SERVICE PROCEDURE:
Figure 1:
1. Gaining Access to the Latch Assembly (Figure 1).
A. After opening the hatch, carefully lift the weatherstrip on the inside of the hatch opening and remove the 2 thumb screws securing the inside finisher panel.
B. Carefully pull away the top portion of the finisher panel.
Figure 2:
2. Checking Procedure
A. Horizontal centering of latch assembly -
^ Lower the hatch slowly, so that it does not lock, but the striker engages the latch. Confirm that the striker doesn't touch the sides of the latch assembly. The striker should guide smoothly into the slot (Figure 2).
Figure 3:
B. Vertical position of the latch -
^ Check that the bottom of the slot in the latch assembly is 2 mm above the bottom of the slot in the body reinforcement (see Dimension "A", Figure 3).
C. Opener lever action -
^ Check that the opener lever operates smoothly: when operated by hand 2 or 3 times, it should fully return to its "Normal" position. Also, check for proper release cable position (Figure 4).

3. Adjustment Procedure
A. Horizontal Centering Incorrect -
^ Loosen the 3 bolts securing the latch assembly and re-tighten (finger tight).
^ Lower the hatch several times - just enough to center the latch assembly - then, raise the hatch and carefully tighten the bolts. Re-check the adjustment, as in Step 2A.
B. Vertical Position Incorrect - Loosen the 3 bolts securing the latch assembly. Carefully move the latch assembly vertically (up or down) until the bottom of the slot in the latch is 2 mm above the slot in the body reinforcement, as shown in Step 2B.
C. Opener Lever, Balky Actuation -
^ Ensure that the opener wire is straight and has no kinks or bends (Figure 5).
Note: Do not overtighten bolts. Use a torque wrench calibrated in "In-Lbs." and torque the 3 bolts to 49-55 In.Lbs.
Figure 6:
C. Opener Lever, Actuation Balky (continued)-
^ If opener lever action is still balky, insert a paper washer between the latch assembly and body reinforcement (Figure 6).
4. Final Check
A. Check that the hatch does not require excessive effort to close- ^ With the hatch lowered and resting on the striker, a weight of 75-100 lbs. should lock the hatch.
^ As a second check, close all doors and windows; now, close the hatch normally. To avoid denting the hatch lid, make sure to apply pressure only to the edge of the hatch, rather than on the surface. Check that both the trunk release lever (in cockpit) and the key, operate smoothly with a small amount of resistance.
^ If the closing effort is too high, re-adjust the latch VERTICAL position in small, 1 mm increments.
B. Ensure that the latch release lever operates smoothly by handC. Ensure that the dome light turns on and off when the latch is opened and closed, respectively- 5. Final Re-assembly
^ Re-install the rear finisher panel and secure with the thumb screws.
^ Re-attach the weatherstrip removed in Step 1.
