W/O Direct Ignition Adapter
***UPDATED BY TSB #92014, DATED FEBRUARY 1992On some 1990 300ZX models the customer may complain of excessive spark knock (ping). This may be caused by the ignition timing being excessively advanced. It may be impossible to adjust the ignition timing to the proper specifications due to a damaged crank angle sensor and/or cam shaft. It may be necessary to replace the crank angle sensor, left cylinder head and cam shaft. Refer to the TSB for complete information.
Removing #1 Ignition Coil:
1. Remove #1 ignition coil.
Special High Tension Wire:
2. Retro-fit a suitable spark plug wire as shown.
Timing Light Connections:
3. Connect the #1 ignition coil and spark plug with the retro-fitted wire. Connect a timing light to the wire.
4. Start the engine and warm it up until the water temperature indicator points to the middle of the gauge.
Timing Marks:
5. Operate the engine at 2000 rpm for 2 minutes under no load the idle and check the ignition timing.
Timing should be 15° ± 2° BTDC.
If not proceed to step 6.
6. Adjust the ignition timing by turning the crank angle sensor, located at the front of the left cylinder head, after loosening the securing bolt.
7. Turn the engine off.
8. Reinstall the ignition coil with a light film of di-electric compound on the inside of the insulator boot.
CAUTION: Be certain the insulator is completely seated prior to tightening the bolts to prevent damaging the ignition coil.
9. Torque the ignition coil fasteners to 2.5 to 3.2 N-m (0.25-0.32 kg-m/1.8-2.4 ft.lbs).
