Fuel Pressure: Testing and Inspection
NOTE: To obtain an accurate fuel pressure reading the engine must by running. Basic fuel pump operation can be verified in a no start condition by observing gauge reading while cranking engine. Fuel pressure should be approximately 43 psi (299 kPa).Fuel Pump Fuse:
1. Remove fuel pump fuse from fuse box.
2. Start engine.
3. When engine stalls, crank or attempt to restart engine 2 or 3 times to release pressure.
4. Turn ignition switch off and reinstall fuel pump fuse.
NOTE: Steps 1 through 4 are provided to release fuel system pressure to eliminate fuel spray.
Fuel Pressure Testing:
5. Connect fuel pressure gauge between fuel filter and fuel rail as shown.
6. Start engine and idle. Gauge should read 36 psi (250 kPa).
7. Disconnect and plug pressure regulator hose. Gauge should read 43 psi (299 kPa).
^ If desired results were achieved, test is complete.
^ If results were unsatisfactory continue.
8. If pressure readings were consistently high, check fuel return lines for restriction and replace pressure regulator if lines OK.
If pressure readings were consistently low, continue.
9. With engine idling, use a smooth jawed pair of pliers and gently pinch fuel return line.
10. If pressure rises to normal or above replace pressure regulator.
If pressure does not increase, replace fuel pump.
