In May, 1989, a new NISSAN CONSULT Unit will be delivered to your dealership.
What is CONSULT?
CONSULT is a revolutionary hand-held NISSAN computer diagnostic unit that may be used to communicate directly with the electronic control units in the vehicle. Its purpose: to provide quick and accurate diagnostic information on those "hard-to-diagnose" vehicles with complex, electronically controlled systems.
What kind of diagnostic information will CONSULT give?
Your CONSULT unit may be used to:
^ Display information that is stored in or sent from each applicable electronic control unit (ECU) in the vehicle. (This includes self-diagnosis items in memory and "real-time" diagnostic items as they occur, which may be stored in the CONSULT memory. In this latter mode, you may drive the vehicle, record the symptom as it occurs into the CONSULT memory, and the CONSULT unit will tell you where in the system the malfunction occurred--this will help you to resolve "intermittent" problems.)
^ Measure directly and display signals from sensors or to actuators and compare the signals with information stored in the control unit.
^ Drive actuators by means of a communication link with the electronic control unit through the diagnostic connector. This provides a quick, simple and accurate check on individual actuator circuits.
^ Make essential voltage, pulse or duty cycle measurements directly and make quick and accurate system adjustments. (For example: initial crank angle sensor adjustment, throttle switch and throttle position sensor adjustment, base idle speed adjustment, fuel pressure release for use when the fuel system must be opened, ATC in-vehicle temperature adjustments.)
^ Determine, in some systems, if the correct control unit is installed, by part number.
Easy to use: Even the most difficult of diagnostic problems can be solved more efficiently through the use of CONSULT. As with any diagnostic tool, some learning must take place before you can use it effectively. However, CONSULT is "user-friendly," with simple controls and clearly marked "touch screen" commands.
Who should learn to use the CONSULT Unit?
Any technician in your Service Department who routinely works on the electronically controlled systems covered by CONSULT should learn its use. This tool will save time, it will increase the accuracy of diagnosis, and it will increase customer satisfaction with the repairs performed at your dealership.
What is the most efficient way to learn how to use the CONSULT Unit?
Instruction manuals are provided with the unit at the time of delivery. Additional instructions will be provided each time updated data cards are sent for updating to new models and new systems. Specific, individual CONSULT test procedures will be included in the NISSAN Service Manuals.
It's also a good idea to take the unit to a vehicle and experiment--learn how to move from screen to screen and see what kind of information CONSULT will provide with each screen.

Yes, if necessary, you may have service and repairs performed on your CONSULT unit through Kent-Moore Tool Co. Temporary replacement units will be available.
