Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Repair Procedure

Two methods are recommended to resolve this incident.

A. Using an "on-car" brake lathe:

This equipment must be of a design which has the cutting tool secured to the upright/steering knuckle at the caliper bolts and drives the rotor via the hub studs.

NOTE: "on-the-car" brake lathes that attach the cutting tool to the motor drive may not be able to achieve the necessary run-out specifications.

B. Using an "off-car" brake lathe:

Use a suitable conventional lathe, which can hold and cut the brake rotor sufficiently to meet specifications for thickness variation. After reinstalling the rotor to the hub, move the rotor on the hub one stud hole at a time to meet the specification for runout.

Use the attached flow chart to complete the repair procedure. Make sure the hub surface is clean and free of any metal burrs or foreign material before beginning the flow chart procedure.
