1. Place engine on a secure work stand.
2. Remove timing chain, drain coolant, remove water pump and drain oil.
3. Remove oil pan and pump, then remove cylinder head, Fig. 16.
4. Remove pistons and connecting rods. When separating pistons from rods, remove snap rings and heat piston to 140-158°F or use hydraulic press at room temperature.
5. Measure crankshaft endplay with a dial indicator. If endplay is not .0020-.0071 inch, replace the thrust bearing.
6. Loosen main bearing bolts in two or three steps and remove main bearing beam and crankshaft.
