Fuel Filler Tube Removal

Kits Required: Kit A

Remove the left rear wheel.
Remove the fuel filler tube as follows:

WARNING:
When removing fuel from the tank, observe the following:

^ Do not smoke. Keep open flames and sparks away from work area.

^ Have a CO2 fire extinguisher handy.

^ Put drained fuel in an explosion-proof container and put lid on securely.

1. Check the fuel level in the vehicle. If the gauge indicates more than 1/2 full, drain the fuel from the tank to a level below 1/2.

CAUTION:
If the fuel filler hoses are disconnected with more than a 1/2 tank of fuel, spillage may occur.

2. Loosen the fuel filler cap to release the fuel pressure from the fuel tank.

3. Remove the four clips that secure the fuel filler tube protector. Remove the fuel filler tube protector.

4. Use flat-faced pinch pliers (or equivalent) on fuel filler hose to prevent debris from entering and to prevent spillage.

IMPORTANT:
Do not use locking pliers with rough or serrated jaws. These may damage the fuel filler hose.

5. Disconnect the fuel filler tube and the breather tube from the fuel tank. Plug the fuel lines.

6. Remove the two bolts (one near the fuel tank and one on the wheel house) that secure the fuel filler tube. If the fuel filler tube bracket is damaged due to corrosion, replace with bracket kit P/N 76767-61E85 (see FUEL FILLER TUBE BRACKET REPAIR).

7. Disconnect the grommet at the fuel filler opening and pull it out through the fuel filler opening.

8. From under the vehicle, remove the fuel filler tube.

9. Remove any debris that may have fallen in or around the fuel hoses from a corroded fuel filler tube.
