REMOVAL
When installing valve train parts or head bolts and rocker arm bolts, apply clean engine oil to lubricate before installing.
1. Drain coolant from radiator and block, disconnect exhaust tube from manifold and remove intake manifold bracket.
2. Remove air cleaner, then release fuel pressure by removing the fuel pump fuse, starting the engine and running until it stalls, then cranking for two or three seconds. Turn ignition switch off.
3. Disconnect distributor center cable, remove rocker cover, remove distributor, remove all spark plugs and set number one piston at TDC of compression stroke.
4. Mark the camshaft sprocket and timing chain alignment, then remove camshaft sprocket and timing chain. The chain can not be removed from crankshaft sprocket unless front cover is removed.
5. Loosen cylinder head bolts in two or three steps following the sequence in Fig. 18, then remove cylinder head.

INSTALLATION
1. Install camshaft and camshaft locate plate.
2. With number one cylinder at TDC of compression stroke (crankshaft timing pointer at timing mark and camshaft knock pin at 12 O'clock position), install cylinder head, then using sequence shown in Fig. 19 tighten bolts as follows:
a. Torque bolts to 22 ft. lbs.
b. Torque bolts to 47 ft. lbs.
c. Loosen all bolts completely.
c. Torque all bolts to 22 ft. lbs.
d. Torque bolt No. 1 an additional 80-85°.
e. Torque bolt Nos. 2 through 10 an additional 60-65°.
f. Torque bolts 11 through 15 to 4.6-6.1 ft. lbs.
3. Install rocker shaft and rocker arm assembly, Fig. 20, then the camshaft sprocket and timing chain. Ensure number one piston is at TDC of compression stroke, then tighten rocker shaft bolts corresponding to cylinder numbers one and two on rocker shaft outward from center to specifications. Rotate crank so that cylinder number four is at TDC of compression stroke and tighten rocker shaft bolts corresponding to cylinders three and four.
4. Install manifolds, then using sequence shown in Fig. 21 tighten bolts to specifications.
5. Install remaining parts. If hydraulic valve lifters are noisy, run engine at 1000 RPM no load for ten minutes. If still noisy, replace.
