Timing Chain: Service and Repair

After removing timing chain, do not turn crankshaft and camshaft separately, or damage to the valves may occur.

REMOVAL

Fig. 5 Engine Exploded View. GA16i:

1. Drain coolant from radiator and block, then remove oil pan.
2. Remove compressor drive, alternator drive and power steering pump drive belts.
3. Remove power steering pump bracket and air cleaner.
4. Support front of engine and remove mounting bracket.
5. Remove water pump, chain tensioner from front cover, rocker cover and spark plugs, Fig. 5.
6. Rotate crankshaft so that the piston of the number one cylinder is at TDC of its compression stroke, then remove the crankshaft pulley.
7. Remove the front cover, then remove the camshaft sprocket bolt without allowing the camshaft to rotate.
8. Remove the chain guides, camshaft sprocket, crankshaft sprocket and timing chain.

INSTALLATION

1. Confirm that No.1 piston is set at T.D.C. of its compression stroke.

2. Install camshaft sprocket, crank shaft sprocket and timing chain.
^ Set timing chain by aligning its mating marks with those of crankshaft sprocket and camshaft sprocket.
^ Make sure sprocket's mating mark faces engine front.
^ The number of links between the alignment marks (silver) are the same for the left and right sides, so either side can be used during alignment with the sprocket.

3. Tighten camshaft sprocket bolt.
^ When installing washer, face its non-chamfered side toward camshaft sprocket.
4. Install chain guide, then apply liquid gasket to front cover and install front cover. Use care when installing front cover so cylinder head gasket will not be damaged.
5. Install chain tensioner, oil pan, water pump, crank pulley, engine mounting bracket and power steering bracket.
