Air Bag Systems: Service and Repair
The airbag system should be inspected every 10 years from date of manufacture as noted on the FMVSS certification label located in the driver's side door jam.
1. Ensure airbag warning lamp illuminates for seven seconds when the ignition key is turned to the On or Start position.
2. Visually inspect SRS sensors as follows:
a. Check sensors to ensure the arrow marks face toward the front of the vehicle.
b. Check body and sensor brackets for deformities and/or rust.
c. Check sensors for dents, cracks, deformities and/or rust.
d. Check sensor harness for binds, connectors for damage and terminals for deformities.
3. Visually inspect SRS control unit as follows:
a. Check case and bracket for dents, cracks or deformities.
b. Check connectors for damage and terminals for deformities.
4. Visually inspect SRS main harness as follows:
a. Check connectors for poor connections.
b. Check harness for binds, connectors for damage and terminals for deformities.
5. Visually inspect SRS spiral cable as follows:
a. Visually inspect lockpins and combination switch for damage.
b. Check connectors, flat cable and protective tape for damage.
c. Check steering wheel for noise, binds or difficult operation.
6. Visually inspect steering wheel as follows:
a. Check harness built into steering wheel and connectors for damage and terminals for deformities.
b. Install airbag module to check fit or alignment with steering wheel.
c. Check steering wheel for excessive freeplay.
7. Visually inspect airbag module as follows:
a. Remove airbag module from steering wheel.
b. Check harness cover and connectors for damage, terminals for deformities and connectors for damage.
c. Install airbag on steering wheel to ensure proper fit or correct alignment with steering wheel.
