RE4R01A EXCESSIVE SHIFT SHOCK
APPLIED MODELS:
1991-92 240SX(S13); 300ZX(Z32); Truck (D21 with RE4R01A); Pathfinder (WD21).
APPLIED BUILD DATE:
8/92
SERVICE INFORMATION:
Some 1991-92 240SX, 300ZX, Truck, and Pathfinder models, produced before the applied date, may exhibit excessive engagement shock and/or shift shock. This incident may be caused by an open circuit or poor continuity in the transmission's electrical control circuit.
SERVICE PROCEDURE:
After verifying that the vehicle exhibits excessive shift shock, use the "Consult" Tester to identify transmission trouble codes or perform the on-board self-diagnosis for the automatic transmission.
Follow the appropriate diagnostic procedure to determine the cause of any trouble codes that are detected. If no trouble codes are identified, check the following harnesses/connections for proper continuity:
^ A/T Control Unit connector: This connector may appear to be tight, but a thorough visual inspection must be done to identify any distortion of the plug connector housing. Such distortion may prevent proper contact of the connector pins with respect to the A/T Control Unit.
^ A/T Harness connector: Verify that all pins in the connector are making proper contact and are fully seated.
^ Solenoid Harness connector: Remove the transmission pan and verify that all pins in the solenoid harness connector are making proper contact and are fully seated.
^ Line Pressure Solenoid ground terminal: Inspect the ground terminal of the line pressure solenoid ground wire. Verify that the ground terminal is crimped properly to the ground wire and that the ground terminal is not damaged. If the ground terminal is broken, replace the line pressure solenoid, P/N 31940-41X04 [Solenoid Ass'y.-Control (contains the line pressure solenoid, which is not available as a component)].
^ Solenoid Harness guide bracket: Inspect the solenoid harness wires passing through the guide bracket (attached to shift solenoid "B"). The guide bracket (Figure 1) may cut the wires for the shift solenoids, causing poor or improper continuity.
