Removal and Installation

REMOVAL

1. Disable airbag system, refer to MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/AIRBAG ARMING & DISARMING.
2. Set steering wheel in neutral position.
3. Remove lower lid from steering wheel, and disconnect airbag module connector, Fig. 26.
4. Remove side cover. Using Torx bit, remove left and right special securing bolts. Always replace special bolts with new.
5. Pull airbag module forward about 1.5 inches and disconnect connector.
6. Ensure that steering wheel is in a straight ahead position.
7. Disconnect horn connector and remove steering wheel nut.
8. Using a suitable steering wheel puller, remove steering wheel.
9. Remove steering wheel column covers.
10. Attach spiral cable stopper to spiral cable or attach spiral cable to its body with suitable tape.
11. Disconnect connector and remove the four screws and the spiral cable.

INSTALLATION

1. Ensure ignition switch is in the Off position.
2. Install spiral cable and tighten screws and connect connector.
3. Remove stopper by pulling two guide pins.
4. If stopper is not used, align spiral cable to the neutral position as follows:
a. Turn spiral cable clockwise until it catches stopper, then turn spiral cable back approximately two full turns until yellow alignment mark appears on left gear, Fig. 27.
b. Align arrow mark of spiral cable with this yellow mark.
5. Install steering wheel aligning spiral cable guide pins and pull spiral cable connector through steering wheel.
6. Connect horn connector and secure spiral cable harness with pawls in steering wheel.
7. Torque steering wheel nut to 22-29 ft, lbs.
8. Install airbag module and secure with new special bolts.
9. Connect airbag module connector.
10. Install all covers.
11. Ensure that entire SRS operates properly using consult tool or self diagnosis. Airbag warning lamp will illuminate for about seven seconds when the ignition switch is turned to the On or Start position to indicate normal operation.
