Removal
1. Release fuel pressure then disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the timing belt.
3. Drain coolant by removing the drain plugs from both sides of the cylinder block. The RH drain plug located behind the drive shaft.
4. Remove the distributor and ignition wires, do not rotate the distributor after it has been removed.
5. Disconnect the A.S.C.D. and accelerator cables from the intake manifold collector.
6. Disconnect the harness connectors for the A.A.C. valve, throttle sensor, and idle switch.
7. Disconnect the water hose for the air cut valve.
8. Disconnect the PCV hoses and the vacuum hoses for the vacuum gallery, swirl control valve, brake master cylinder, and the EGR control valve.
9. Disconnect the EGR flare tube.
10. Remove the upper intake manifold collector from the engine, removing the bolts in the pattern shown above.
11. Remove the engine ground harness and remove the lower intake manifold collector following the pattern shown above.
12. Disconnect the harness connectors for the injectors, engine temperature switch, engine temperature sensor, power valve control solenoid, EGR control solenoid and, on California vehicles, the exhaust gas temperature sensor.
13. Disconnect the vacuum gallery and the vacuum hoses for the fuel pressure regulator and all the vacuum hoses connected to the vacuum gallery.
14. Disconnect the heater hose from the engine, the fuel feed and return hoses, and the injector fuel rail assembly.
15. Remove the intake manifold, only loosen the bolts in the order shown above.
16. Remove both cam sprockets.
17. Remove the rear timing belt cover.
18. Remove the front exhaust tube from the exhaust manifold.
Rocker Arm Cover Assembly Sequence:
19. Remove both valve covers.
20. Remove both the A/C compressor and alternator, then remove the bracket.
21. Loosen the head bolts in two to three steps in the order shown. Remove the head bolts and remove the cylinder heads.
