Assembly

Placement Of Main Bearings:

1. Set main bearings in their proper positions on cylinder block and main bearing beam.

CAUTION: Prior to tightening bearing cap bolts, place bearing cap in its proper position by shifting crankshaft in the axial direction. Tighten bearing cap bolts gradually in two or three stages. Start with center bearing and move outward sequentially.

Tightening Sequence - Main Bearing Beam:

2. Install crankshaft and main bearing beam.
Torque bolts to: 46 - 52 N-m (34 - 38 ft.lb.)

CAUTION: After securing bearing cap bolts, make sure crankshaft turns smoothly by hand.

Piston Installation:

3. Install pistons with connecting rods into corresponding cylinders with Tool. Arrange so that front mark on piston head faces toward front of engine.

CAUTION: Be careful not to scratch cylinder wall by connecting rod.

Angle Torque Of Rod Bearing Nuts:

4. Install connecting rod bearing caps.
- Tighten to: 14 to 16 N-m (10 to 12 ft.lb.)
- Tighten bolts 60 to 65 degrees clockwise
with an angle wrench, or if an angle wrench is not available,
tighten them to: 38 to 44 N-m (28 to 33 ft.lb.).

5. Install oil pan. Torque bolts to: 7 - 8 N-m (5.1 - 5.8 ft.lb.)

Head Bolt Tightening Sequence:

6. Install cylinder head using the following procedure:
(1) Tighten all bolts to: 29 N-m (22 ft.lb.)
(2) Tighten all bolts to: 78 N-m (58 ft.lb.)
(3) Loosen all bolts completely.
(4) Tighten all bolts to: 29 N-m (22 ft.lb.)
(5) Turn all bolts 80 to 85 degrees clockwise with an angle wrench, or if an angle wrench is not available, tighten all bolts to:
74 - 83 N-m (54 - 61 ft.lb.)

7. Install timing chain.
8. Install water pump. Service and Repair
