Transmission Position Sensor/Switch: Description and Operation

Neutral Position Switch
A contact switch mounted on the upper portion of the transmission extension housing. The switch opens or closes the ground connection depending upon gear selection. this signal is sent to the ECM to determine when the vehicle is in neutral.
