Wheel Hub: Service and Repair

Refer to Fig. 6, when replacing wheel hub and knuckle assembly.
1. Remove wheel bearing locknut, then brake caliper.
2. Separate tie rod from knuckle using a suitable tool, Fig. 4.
3. Separate driveshafts from knuckle, remove knuckle attaching bolts as shown in Fig. 7, then knuckle.
4. If you are only replacing the knuckle assembly, reverse procedure to install, tighten wheel bearing to specifications. If you need to replace the bearing, proceed.
5. To remove wheel bearing assembly from knuckle, proceed as follows:
a. Drive hub with inner race from knuckle using suitable tool.
b. Remove bearing inner race, then the grease seal.
c. Using a screwdriver, remove inner grease seal from knuckle.
d. Remove inner and outer snap rings.
e. Using a suitable tool, press out bearing outer race.
6. To install wheel bearing assembly into knuckle, proceed as follows:
a. Install inner snap ring into groove of knuckle.
b. Using a suitable press, press new wheel bearing assembly into knuckle. Do not press inner race of wheel bearing assembly. Do not apply oil or grease to mating surfaces of wheel bearing outer race and knuckle.
c. Install outer snap ring into groove of knuckle.
d. Pack grease seal lip with multi-purpose grease, then install outer grease seal.
e. Install inner grease seal, then press hub into knuckle.
7. Reverse steps to install wheel hub and knuckle assembly.
