Engine: Service and Repair


1. Release fuel system pressure as outlined under Technician Safety Information.
2. Remove hood and disconnect battery ground cable.
3. Drain engine coolant from cylinder block and radiator.
4. Disconnect vacuum and fuel hoses, wires, harnesses, electrical connectors and linkages. Mark hoses and electrical connectors for installation reference.
5. Remove radiator, fans and coupling, then the drive belts.
6. Remove alternator, then the air conditioning compressor and power steering pump without disconnecting pressure hoses. Position compressor and pump aside.
7. Raise and support vehicle, remove engine undercover and drain engine oil.
8. Remove exhaust pipes and drive shafts, as necessary.
9. On models with manual transmission, proceed as follows:
a. Remove starter motor and clutch cylinder, then disconnect air conditioning tube clamps.
b. Disconnect steering column lower joint, then remove tension rod fixing bolts.
c. Loosen transverse link bolts.
d. Attach suitable lifting equipment to engine and support suspension member with suitable jack.
e. Remove suspension member and engine mounting bolts.
f. Slowly lower jack and remove engine with transmission from vehicle.

10. On models with automatic transmission, proceed as follows:
a. Remove starter motor.
b. Remove transmission.
c. Attach suitable lifting equipment to engine.
d. Remove engine mounting bolts.
e. Lift engine from vehicle.

11. Reverse procedure to install.
