1993 and 1994 MAXIMA CHILD RESTRAINT INSTALLATION NOTICE

SERVICE INFORMATION:

A supplementary child restraint buckle is not required to install a child restraint in the front passenger seat of a 1993 or 1994 Maxima. 1993 and 1994 Maxima lap belts are of the ELR/ALR type (Emergency Locking Retractor/Automatic Locking Retractor). If operated properly, they will automatically lock on a child restraint and provide the correct tension. No supplementary buckle and no locking clip is required.

^ To use the automatic locking function, simply pull the lap belt all the way out of its retractor until it clicks. Now, as the belt returns into the retractor, it locks at any belt length any time tension is applied.

^ To release the automatic locking function and return to emergency locking only, allow the belt to go all the way back into the retractor. Now, it may be pulled out again.

The 1993 and 1994 Maxima Owner's Manuals contain an incorrect statement (on page 2-25 of the 1993 Manual and on page 26 of the 1994 Manual) which says a supplementary buckle must be installed in order to use a child restraint on the front seat. Please disregard this statement and use the child restraint installation procedure shown on page 2-29 of the 1993 Manual or page 2-30 of the 1994 Manual for U.S.A. automatic seat belt models.
