Automatic Transmission

Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) Output Characteristics:

PURPOSE
To provide the Engine Control Module (ECM) with a voltage signal that corresponds to the opening angle of the throttle.

OPERATION
The Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) is a potentiometer which transforms the throttle position into output voltage, and emits that voltage signal to the ECM. In addition, the sensor detects the opening and closing speed of the throttle valve and feeds that voltage signal to the ECM.

Idle position of the throttle valve is determined by the ECM receiving the signal from the TPS. This system is called "soft closed throttle position switch". This switch controls engine operation such as fuel cut.

For SR20DE - Automatic Transmission models, "Hard Closed Throttle Position" and "Wide Open Throttle Position" Switches are built into the TPS unit. The Hard Closed Throttle Position Switch is not used for engine control. To send a full throttle signal to the ECM, the Wide Open Throttle Position Switch is used.
