Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair
REMOVAL1. Remove intake manifold as outlined in Intake Manifold.
2. Remove timing chain as outlined in Timing Chain.
3. Remove cylinder heads.
INSTALLATION
Before installing rear timing chain case or cam bracket, removal all traces of liquid gasket. Remove all traces of liquid gasket from cylinder block mating surfaces and remove O-rings.
1. Turn crankshaft until No. 1 piston is set 240° before TDC on compression stroke.
2. Install cylinder heads with new gaskets. Do not rotate crankshaft and camshaft separately or valves will strike pistons.
3. Cylinder head bolts are tightened by plastic zone tightening. Measure all bolts, Fig. 3. If diameter "d1" minus "d2" exceeds 0.0043 inch, replace bolt.

4. Tighten cylinder head bolts in order, Fig. 4, as follows:
a. Torque bolts to 72 ft. lbs.
b. Completely loosen bolts.
c. Torque bolts to 25-33 ft. lbs.
d. Turn bolts 90-95° clockwise.
e. Turn bolts 90-95° clockwise, again.
5. Install cylinder head outside bolts, torque to 7 ft. lbs., loosen completely, and torque to 7 ft. lbs. in three steps.
6. Install cam tensioners and apply sealant to No.1 journal head mating surface.
7. Install exhaust and intake camshafts.
8. Install camshaft brackets in original positions and tighten bolts in three steps as follows:
Fig. 5 Camshaft Bracket Tightening Sequence:
a. First torque bolts in order of 7 to 10, then 1 to 6, to 17 inch lbs., Fig. 5.
b. Second torque bolts in numerical order to 52 inch lbs.
c. Finally torque bolts in numerical order to 7-9 ft. lbs.
9. If any part of valve or camshaft assembly has been replaced, check valve clearance as outlined in Valve, Intake/Exhaust.
10. Install cylinder block O-rings and apply sealant to hatched portions of rear timing chain case.
11. Align rear timing chain case with dowel pins, then install on cylinder head and block.
