SERVICE INFORMATION
If an applied 1995-96 Altima or Maxima has the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) "ON" and a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0136 (rear oxygen sensor) is found stored in the ECM self diagnosis memory, the sensor element may be contaminated.
A new rear oxygen sensor is now available to correct this incident, if it should occur.
Use the following service procedure to verify the condition and replace the rear oxygen sensor.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Verify the MIL light is on and DTC P0136 is stored in self diagnosis memory.
2. Refer to "Rear Oxygen Sensor Overall Operation Test" attachment (Attachment A) or ASIST users click here to verify the operation of the oxygen sensor.
A. If the oxygen sensor passes the operational test, this bulletin does not apply
B. If the oxygen sensor fails the operational test, replace the oxygen sensor with the appropriate part listed in the PARTS INFORMATION section of this bulletin.
C. For Maxima vehicles, you must determine the vehicle's manufacture date in order to replace the oxygen sensor with the appropriate part:
1) If the vehicle was manufactured before 6/96, install oxygen sensor P/N 226A0-40U62 (see Figure 1).
2) If the vehicle was manufactured after 6/96, install oxygen sensor P/N 226A0-49U02 (see Figure 1).
D. For all Altima vehicles, install oxygen sensor P/N 226A0-40U62.
