Classification:
EC97-021

Reference:
NTB97-075

Date:
November 1, 1997

1995-97 SENTRA EXHAUST ODOR

APPLIED VEHICLE:
1995-97 Sentra

APPLIED ENGINE:
GA16DE

SERVICE INFORMATION

If a Sentra operated in a federal emissions state demonstrates a sulfur or "rotten egg" odor coming from the tailpipe, this condition may be caused by excessive sulfur in the fuels.

NOTE:
Fuels that contain higher levels of sulfur may be sold in all states except California.

Countermeasure ECMs have been developed for GA16DE engine vehicles to reduce this sulfur odor, which occurs during idle operation.

Important:
These ECMs are for use only in vehicles with customer complaints of sulfur or "rotten egg" odor. All other ECM replacements, for whatever reason, require use of the "current" part number.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

If a Sentra customer complains of sulfur or "rotten egg" odor, replace the vehicle ECM. Refer to Figure 1 for ECM location. Do not replace the catalytic converter for this complaint.
