1993-97 ALTIMA HVAC BLOWER MOTOR NOISE
APPLIED VEHICLE:
All 1993-96 Altima (U13)
All 1997 Altima (U13) built before 3/97
SERVICE INFORMATION
If a 1993-96 Altima or 1997 Altima (built before 3/97) exhibits HVAC blower motor noise, the cause may be debris, such as leaves and pine needles, trapped in the blower motor assembly. Such debris can enter the blower motor through side gaps between the vehicle body and the cowl top panel.
To correct this incident, foam seals must be installed to the underside of the cowl top panel at each end. These foam seals fill the gaps between the vehicle body and the cowl top panel and prevent debris from entering the HVAC system.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Remove the windshield wiper arms (two M10 nuts).
2. Remove the cowl top panel as shown on page BT-21 of the 1996 Altima Service Manual.
3. Install foam seals A and B to the underside of the drivers side cowl top panel as follows (see Figure 1):
A. Clean the surface of the cowl top panel where the foam seals will be installed.
B. Using spray adhesive (3M(R) brand Super 77 P/N 021200-21210 or equivalent) install foam seal B to the underside of the cowl top panel (see Figure 1).
C. Remove the self adhesive cover strip and install foam seal A to the underside of the cowl top panel (see Figure 1).
4. Install foam seals C and D to the underside of the passenger side cowl top panel as follows (see Figure 2):.
A. Clean the surface of the cowl top panel where the foam seals will be installed.
B. Using spray adhesive (3M brand Super 77 P/N 021200-21210 or equivalent) install foam seal D to the underside of the cowl top panel (see Figure 2).
C. Remove the self adhesive cover strip and install foam seal C to the underside of the cowl top panel (see Figure 2).
5. Remove debris in the cowl and HVAC intake areas.
6. Remove the HVAC blower motor assembly and remove debris inside the blower motor assembly.
7. Remove debris from within the inlet side of the A/C evaporator assembly. Do not remove the NC evaporator assembly.
NOTE:
The best way to remove debris is to use a wet/dry vacuum cleaner
8. Reinstall the blower motor assembly.
9. Reinstall the cowl top panel.
10. Reinstall the windshield wiper arms and the attachment nuts.
IMPORTANT:
Use the procedure on page EL-106 of the 1996 Altima Service Manual to properly install the windshield wiper arms.
