MIL ON - DTC P0136 (Rear O2 Sensor)

BULLETIN NUMBER:
NTB98-011a

CLASSIFICATION:
EC97-033a

TITLE:
1997 MAXIMA MIL "ON"; DTC P0136 REAR OXYGEN SENSOR STORED IN THE ECM

DATE:
July 1, 1998

This amended version of NTB98-O11 simplifies the procedure, updates the claims Information, deletes the Diagnostic Chart and deletes two figures. Please discard all paper copies of NTB98-O11.

APPLIED VEHICLE:
1997 Maxima (A32)

SERVICE INFORMATION

If a 1997 Maxima has a MIL "On" and DTC P0136 rear O2 sensor stored in the ECM, refer to Figure 1 to identify the rear O2 sensor configuration. Use the diagnostic information in this bulletin to help determine the cause of the DTC and to determine if it is necessary to install the available countermeasure exhaust kit. This kit upgrades the rear O2 sensor and exhaust to 1998 specifications by repositioning the O2 sensor to minimize any damage to it as a result of exhaust moisture contacting the element.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Examine the rear O2 sensor placement in the exhaust system and compare it to Figures 1a and 1b.

A. If the vehicle has the original configuration (as in Figure 1a), install the countermeasure exhaust kit.

B. If: 1) you diagnose that the O2 sensor is not operating correctly, and 2) it is necessary to replace the O2 sensor in a vehicle that has already been upgraded with the countermeasure kit (as in Figure 1b), be sure to use the 1998 P/N referenced in the Parts Information section at the end of this bulletin.

CAUTION: The 1997 O2 sensor P/N will not fit in a vehicle with the revised sensor configuration from the countermeasure exhaust kit.

ORIGINAL EXHAUST KIT REMOVAL (see Figure 1a)

1. Remove the protective shield below the catalytic converter (save the shield and bolts for reinstallation).

2. Remove and discard the rear O2 sensor and sensor protective side shield. Disconnect electrical connector through the grommet.

3. Remove the center exhaust tube from the converter. Discard the exhaust tube and the four mounting bolts and nuts.

4. Remove the heat insulator above the converter from the vehicle's underbody and discard.

NEW EXHAUST KIT INSTALLATION (see Figure 2)

1. Install the new heat insulator to the underbody of the vehicle using the old bolts.

2. Install the new center exhaust tube between the converter and front end of the exhaust system using new nuts, bolts, and gaskets. The center tube should have the O2 sensor mounting hole facing up toward the vehicle underbody (see Figure lb).

3. Install the new rear O2 sensor into the center exhaust tube.

4. Secure the sensor harness to the heat insulator using two clips.

5. Connect the O2 sensor harness to the vehicle harness through the underbody.

6. Install the rubber grommet into the underbody hole.

7. Reinstall protective shield using original bolts.
