Replacement

CAUTION: When removing the transaxle assembly from engine, first
remove the Crankshaft Position Sensor (POS) from the assembly. Be careful not to damage sensor edge.

REMOVAL
1. Remove battery and bracket.
2. Remove air cleaner and resonator.
3. Disconnect terminal cord assembly harness connector and inhibitor switch harness connectors.
4. Disconnect harness connectors of revolution sensor and vehicle speed sensor.
5. Remove crankshaft position sensor (POS) from transaxle.
6. Remove LH engine mounting from transaxle and body. Tighten LH engine mounting bolts to the specified torque. Refer to Engine.
7. Disconnect control cable at transaxle side.
8. Drain ATF.
9. Remove drive shafts.
10. Disconnect oil cooler piping.
11. Remove starter motor from transaxle.
12. Support engine by placing a jack under oil pan. Do not place jack under oil pan drain plug.
13. Remove center member. Tighten center member bolts to the specified torque. Refer to Engine.

14. Remove rear cover plate and bolts securing torque converter to drive plate. Tighten rear plate cover bolts to the specified torque. Refer to Engine. Rotate crankshaft for access to securing bolts.

15. Support transaxle with a jack.
16. Remove bolts fixing A/T to engine.
17. Lower transaxle while supporting it with a jack.

INSTALLATION
Reverse the removal procedure to install, noting the following:
- Drive plate runout.

CAUTION: Do not allow any magnetic materials to contact the ring gear teeth.

- Maximum allowable runout: Refer to Engine. If this runout is out of allowance, replace drive plate with ring gear.

- When connecting torque converter to transaxle, measure distance "A" to be certain that they are correctly assemble d.
Distance "A": 14 mm (0.55 inch) or more.

- Install bolts fixing converter to drive plate. With converter installed, rotate crankshaft several turns to check that transaxle rotates freely without binding.

- Refer to the illustration and tighten bolts securing transaxle. Torque all bolts to 70 - 79 Nm (51 - 59 ft. lbs.).

NOTE:
- Bolt No. 1 length is 65 mm (2.56 inch)
- Bolt No. 2 length is 52 mm (2.05 inch)
- Bolt No. 3 length is 52 mm (2.05 inch)
- Bolt No. 4 length is 40 mm (1.57 inch)
- Bolt No. 5 length is 124 mm (4.88 inch)

- Reinstall any part removed.
- Check fluid level in transaxle. Move selector lever through all positions to be sure that transaxle operates correctly. With parking brake applied, rotate engine at idling. Move selector lever through "N" to "D"' to "2", to "1" and to "R" position. A slight shock should be felt by hand gripping selector each time transaxle is shifted.
- Perform road test.
