Valve Clearance: Adjustments

ADJUST valve clearance while engine is cold.
1. Turn crankshaft. Position cam lobe upward on camshaft for valve that must be adjusted.
2. Before placing camshaft pliers tool No. KV10115110, or equivalent, around camshaft as shown, rotate notch toward center of cylinder head. This will simplify shim removal later.

NOTE: Be careful not to damage cam surface with camshaft plies.





3. Rotate camshaft plies so that valve lifter is pushed down.





4. Place lifter stopper tool No. KV10115120, or equivalent, between camshaft and valve lifter to retain valve lifter.

NOTE: Lifter stopper tool must be placed as close to camshaft bracket as possible. Be careful not to damage cam surface with lifter stopper.

5. Remove camshaft pliers.





6. Remove adjusting shim using a small screwdriver and a magnetic finger.





7. Use a micrometer to determine thickness of removed shim to determine the replacement adjusting shim size using the following formula. Calculate thickness of new adjusting shim so valve clearance comes within specified values.
- Intake: N = R + [M - 0.37 mm (0.0146 inch)].
- Exhaust: N = R + [M - 0.40 mm (0.0157 inch)].
R = Thickness of removed shim
N = Thickness of new shim
M = Measured valve clearance





- Shims are available in 50 sizes from 2.00 mm (0.0787 inch) to 2.98 mm (0.1173 inch), in steps of 0.02 mm (0.0008 inch). Select the closest size shim to the calculated thickness.





8. Using a suitable tool, install new shims with the surface on which the thickness is stamped face down.





9. Place camshaft pliers (tool A) as explained in steps 2 and 3.
10. Remove lifter stopper (tool B).
11. Remove camshaft pliers (tool A).
12. Recheck valve clearance.
- For Checking
The (hot) intake valve clearance is 0.21 - 0.49 mm (0.008 - 0.019 inch).
The exhaust clearance is 0.30 - 0.58 mm (0.012 - 0.023 inch).
- For Adjusting
The (cold/reference data) intake valve clearance is 0.25 - 0.33 mm (0.010 - 0.013 inch).
The exhaust clearance is 0.32 - 0.40 mm (0.013 - 0.016 inch).


The (hot) intake valve clearance is 0.32 - 0.40 mm (0.013 - 0.016 inch).
The exhaust clearance is 0.37 - 0.45 mm (0.015 - 0.018 inch).
