Replacement

REMOVAL
1. Remove battery and bracket.
2. Remove air duct between throttle body and air cleaner.
3. Remove torque converter clutch solenoid valve harness connector, inhibitor switch harness connector and vehicle speed sensor harness connector.
4. Remove crankshaft position sensor (OBD) from transaxle.

5. Disconnect throttle wire at engine side.

6. Drain ATF from transaxle.
7. Disconnect control cable from transaxle.
8. Disconnect oil cooler hoses.
9. Remove drive shafts.
10. Remove the intake manifold support bracket. Refer to Engine.
11. Remove starter motor from transaxle.

Installations Hint: Tighten bolts to 31 - 42 Nm (23 - 31 ft. lbs.)

12. Remove upper bolts fixing transaxle to engine.
13. Support transaxle with a jack.

14. Remove center member.

Installations Hint: Tighten center member fixing bolts to specified torque, Refer to Engine.

15. Remove front and rear gussets and engine rear plate.
16. Remove torque converter bolts. Rotate crankshaft to gain access to securing bolts.
17. Remove rear transaxle to engine bracket. Refer to Engine.
18. Support engine with a jack.
19. Remove rear transaxle mount. Refer to Engine.
20. Remove lower bolts fixing transaxle to engine.
21. Lower transaxle with an A/T jack.

INSTALLATION
1. Check drive plate runout. Refer to Engine.
If this runout is out of allowance, replace drive plate with ring gear.

CAUTION: Do not allow any magnetic materials to contact the ring gear teeth.

2. When connecting torque converter to transaxle, measure distance "A" to be certain that they are correctly assembled.
Distance "A": 21.1 mm (0.831 inch) or more

3. Install torque converter to drive plate. With converter installed, rotate crankshaft several turns to check that transaxle rotates freely without binding.

4. Tighten bolts fixing transaxle to the following specifications (note the bolt length):
- Bolt No. 1: 30 - 40 Nm (22 - 30 ft. lbs.)
Length: 50 mm (1.97 inch)
- Bolt No. 2: 30 - 40 Nm (22 - 30 ft. lbs.)
Length: 30 mm (1.18 inch)
- Bolt No. 3: 16 - 21 Nm (12 - 15 ft. lbs.)
Length: 25 mm (0.98 inch)
- Front gusset to engine bolt: 30 - 40 Nm (22 - 30 ft. lbs.)
Length: 20 mm (0.79 inch)
- Rear gusset to engine bolt: 16 - 21 Nm (12 - 15 ft. lbs.)
Length: 16 mm (0.63 inch)
5. Reinstall any part removed.
6. Adjust control cable.
7. Adjust throttle wire.
8. Check continuity of inhibitor switch.
9. Refill transaxle with ATF and check fluid level.
10. Move selector lever through all positions to be sure that transaxle operates correctly. With parking brake applied, idle engine. Move selector lever through "N" to "D", to "2", to "1" and "R" positions. A slight shock should be felt through the hand gripping the selector each time the transaxle is shifted.
11. Perform road test.
