AIR CONDITIONING POOR OR NO COOLING DUE TO LOW PRESSURE HOSE CRACKING
APPLIED VEHICLE:
1996-98 240SX (S14)
APPLIED VINS:
Vehicles with ABS - built before JN1AS44D*WW107466
APPLIED DATES:
Vehicles with ABS - built before January 12, 1998 Vehicles without ABS - all within 1996-98 model year
SERVICE INFORMATION
If a 1996-98 2405X exhibits poor or no A/C cooling, the cause may be a crack in the A/C low pressure hose at the compressor connector or muffler area. This condition will result in refrigerant loss and poor or no A/C cooling. A countermeasure low pressure hose kit has been developed to correct this incident.
This procedure should be used whenever replacing a low pressure hose or when installing a complete A/C kit.
Use the VIN to verify the model year of the vehicle. JN1******T*-****** T = 1996, V = 1997, W = 1998
1996 Install service hose kit 92481-70F26.
1997 Install service hose kit 92481-81F25.
1998 Vehicles with ABS built before JN1AS44D*WW107466, install service hose kit 92481-81F25.
1998 Vehicles without ABS, determine if the low pressure hose support bracket is already present (see Figure 1). If not, install service hose kit 92481-81F25. If it is, this bulletin does not apply.
NOTE:
1998 models with ABS built after JN1AS44D*WW-107466 were equipped at the factory with a two piece low side bracket that is mounted between the compressor body and the low pressure hose. This two piece bracket was also designed to eliminate cracking at the compressor flange. This bulletin does not apply to vehicles already equipped with any low side support bracket.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Discharge and recover any remaining refrigerant in the vehicle's A/C system.
2. Remove the low A/C hose from the compressor flange and the adjoining low pressure pipe coming from the evaporator.
3. Loosen, but do not remove the upper front compressor mounting bolt (bolt closest to the compressor clutch pulley).
4. Remove the new low A/C hose from the service hose kit and apply Nissan A/C system oil Type S (P/N KLH00-PAGS1) to the joint connection O-rings.
NOTE:
If it is necessary to replace the O-rings on the new low A/C hose assembly, use the correct O-rings specified for "Captured O-ring" type A/C connections: (O-ring between low A/C hose and compressor is P/N 92474-N8210, O-ring between the low A/C hose and the adjoining evaporator low pressure pipe is P/N 92473-N8210).
5. Install the new low A/C hose. Tighten the hose connections as follows:
A. Tighten the nut that secures the low hose to the compressor to 8 - 11 Nm (0.8 - 1.1 kg-m, 69-95 in-lb) and
B. Tighten the connection between the low hose and the low pressure pipe (from the evaporator) to 25 - 34 Nm (2.5 - 3.5 kg-m, 18 - 25 ft-lb).
6. Install the support bracket (supplied in the kit) as follows:
A. Loosely install the support bracket to the low A/C hose (do not tighten the support bracket pinch bolt at this time) (see Figure 1).
B. Insert the slotted end of the support bracket between the upper front compressor mounting bolt and the compressor mounting boss (see Figure 1).
C. Tighten upper front compressor mounting bolt to specification (see Figure 1).
D. Tighten the support bracket pinch bolt to specification (see Figure 1).
7. Evacuate and recharge the vehicle's A/C system with 0.60 - 0.70 kg (1.32 - 1.54 lb) of HFC-134a refrigerant (refer to pages HA-63 and HA-64 of the 1997 240SX Service Manual for the A/C evacuation and recharge procedure).
8. Conduct a leak test to ensure there are no refrigerant leaks (refer to pages HA-68 and HA-69 of the 1997 240SX Service Manual for the leak check procedure).
9. Check A/C performance (refer to page HA-34 of the 1997 240SX Service Manual for the A/C performance check procedure).
