1998 ALTIMA ROTATIONAL CLUNK NOISE FROM REAR

APPLIED VEHICLE:
1998 Altima (L30)

SERVICE INFORMATION

If there is a rotational scraping/clunking noise coming from the rear of a 1998 Altima, the cause may be a loose left and/or right parking brake cable. This noise may be heard when the vehicle is loaded with two passengers in the rear seat while driving around turns.

This noise may be caused by the parking brake cable bracket not crimped tightly to the cable allowing the cable to "float" in the bracket. The brake cable may then contact the rear wheel/wheel weights while turning and produce the noise.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Remove the left and right rear wheels.

2. Inspect the parking brake cable for signs of contact with the wheel or tire:

^ Check for abrasion (see Figure 1)

^ Check that the cable is tight in the bracket (the cable does not slide) See Figure 2.

3. If you find a parking brake cable loose in the bracket or the cable has abrasion, replace the parking brake cable. Refer to page BR-33 of the service manual.
