SERVICE INFORMATION
If it is necessary to hold the crankshaft stationary (i.e., keep the crankshaft from rotating) during on-vehicle engine service (such as crankshaft pulley removal, etc.), use the new "Flex Plate Ring Gear Stopper" tool P/N J45353.
^ The new tool can be easily installed in the crankshaft position sensor hole in the bell housing. Refer to the Service Procedure for instructions on installing this new tool.
^ This tool applies to vehicles equipped with automatic transmission. To hold the engine still on a manual transmission equipped vehicle, place the transmission in gear and apply the parking brake.
^ J45353 is an essential tool and was already sent to all Nissan dealers.
^ For additional information about this tool, refer to the revised Essential Tool Shipment Flyer, Figure 1.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Turn the ignition key to the OFF position.
2. Disconnect the negative battery cable so the engine cannot be accidentally cranked.
3. Locate and remove the crankshaft position sensor from the bell housing.
4. Install the Flex Plate Ring Gear Stopper tool (J45353) as follows:
A. Insert the tool into the crankshaft position sensor hole.
B. Loosen the set screw on the tool.
C. Align the tool base on the bell housing and install (finger tight) the existing sensor bolt through the tool base and into the bell housing.
D. Make sure the notch on the end of the tool is fully engaged in the flex plate ring gear teeth (see Figure 2).
NOTES:
^ You may have to manually rotate the engine slightly (using a socket on the crankshaft pulley bolt) to align the flex plate ring gear teeth with the notch in the stopper tool.
^ To help you know the orientation of the notch (on the tool) a gear tooth alignment reference mark is stamped into the opposite end of the tool (see Figure 2).
E. Secure the tool by tightening the sensor bolt (previously installed in Step 4c). See Figure 2.
F. Tighten the set screw on the tool (see Figure 2).
CAUTION:
Do NOT forget to remove the tool once the service is complete as engine damage may occur.
