1998 ALTIMA DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE FOR SLOW FUEL FILL
This amended version of NTB98-013 updates the Service Procedure Section. Please discard all paper copies of NTB98-013.
APPLIED VEHICLE:
All 1998 Altima (L30)
SERVICE INFORMATION
Use the procedure in this bulletin to diagnose and repair a 1998 Altima if it is difficult to fill the fuel tank (i.e.: the gas station fuel nozzle 'clicks off' every few seconds and must be reset). This incident can be caused by blockage in the vapor recovery lines.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
IMPORTANT:
Make sure the vehicle has less than 1/4 tank of fuel before you begin this procedure.
Check 1
1. Connect CONSULT and check Self Diagnosis Results for a P1446 code.
A. If you find the P1446 code, use the Trouble Diagnosis procedure on page EC-368 in the 1998 Altima Service Manual. Then continue with the procedure that follows
B. If you do not find the P1446 code, continue with the procedure that follows.
2. Remove the gas cap and raise the vehicle on a hoist.
3. Remove the left rear wheel.
4. Disconnect the fuel filler signal line and recirculation line from where they connect into their hoses at the frame rail (see Figure 1).
5. Check for blockage as follows:
A. Connect a hand vacuum pump to the recirculation line and attempt to pull a vacuum.
B. Repeat this step on the signal line.
^ If you can pull a vacuum on either line, replace the fuel filler tube assembly (P/N 17221 - 0Z001).
C. Reconnect the recirculation and signal hoses.
Check 2
1. Disconnect the rubber vent hose from the steel tube (fuel tank vent line) on the fuel tank side (see Figure 2).
2. Disconnect the fuel tank vent line at the EVAP canister (see Figure 3).
3. Connect an additional length of suitable hose to the rubber hose on the EVAP canister. Gently blow through the fuel tank vent line forward toward the tank (see Figure 4).
^ The air should flow freely. If you experience blockage, replace the fuel filler tube assembly (P/N 17221-0Z001).
^ If air flows freely, go to Step 4.
4. If all the lines check okay, refer to the 1998 Altima Service Manual, pages EC-28 and EC-29 and perform the component inspection for refueling control valve, refueling EVAP vapor cut valve, and one-way fuel valve.
5. Reconnect all hoses and vent lines.
